There is no sea in the plot, but there is a river – Neva. Water occupies almost the entire space, partly restrained only by the banks and built houses. At some point, the water merges with the overcast sky. And it is not always possible to accurately identify the line where one element passes into another. The setting sun slightly illuminates the sky, gradually becoming overcast, and is reflected in the water. The color of the river and the sky is almost the same – turquoise, light gray. As in most of Aivazovsky's paintings, water dominates here. There are many sailboats, both moored to the shore and floating, several small boats, and even a raft operated by a pilot. Given the number of large and small vessels, the pilot must be very skilled.
