The painting is based on the Biblical story of the Prodigal Son from the Gospel of Luke and is the embodiment of spiritual and carnal, divine, heavenly and earthly principles. There is an opinion that in the painting the artist depicted himself in different guises, at different stages of spiritual rebirth. On the one hand, the master imagines himself as a prodigal son, repenting of his own sins before his earthly father and God, who is depicted as an old man. On the other hand, this is the eldest son, in whom conscience is embodied. Here, the younger son is a symbol of reproach for the sins of youth. The old father accepts the prodigal son, despite his mistakes and blunders in life, he forgives him and pities him. There is a man standing behind the old man-father, in which the artist has depicted himself. He looks not only at the characters in the picture, but also at the viewer, involving him in his world of experiences.
