Bribed by the envious of some three husbands, the mayor condemned them to death. Having learned about the unjust act of the lay mayor, St. Nicholas immediately rushed to the rescue. He appeared at the place of execution when the sword was already raised over the heads of innocent convicts. Having removed the guards, the saint stopped the executioner's hand. No one dared to obstruct him. The mayor, menacingly denounced by Saint Nicholas, confessed his sin and asked to accept his repentance. The picture turned out to be really emotional and frightening.
